Moving to a place is easy. Living in it is the hard part — the school run, the clinic nobody warned you about, the mechanic who does not overcharge, the thing everyone else already knows. Open State is where that knowledge stops being private.
Open State is a community platform for people living in Johor. Not a relocation agency, not a property portal, not a listicle of ten things to do at the weekend. It is the place where useful local knowledge and practical help are collected and made available to the people who need them.
What members get, in the platform's own words: a hub for JB locals and expats, special rates and hidden deals, and activities for all ages and nationalities. Creating an account is free; each member gets an @handle as their public identity.
Open State runs in English, Bahasa Melayu, Chinese, Tamil, Japanese and Korean.
Look closely at that list, because it contains a decision. Most platforms aimed at newcomers ship in English and stop — which quietly means "built for foreigners, about locals." Including Bahasa Melayu, Chinese and Tamil says the opposite: this is Johor's own languages first, with Japanese and Korean added for the communities who have arrived more recently.
That is the difference between a platform that extracts from a place and one that belongs to it.
Johor is in the middle of something. The Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone is drawing capital, companies and people across the strait, and the population of the state is changing faster than the local knowledge available to it.
When a place changes that quickly, the practical information that makes daily life work — which clinic, which school, which road at which hour, which shop will not overcharge you for being new — stays trapped in private group chats and word of mouth. Newcomers pay a tax in wasted time and small humiliations. Locals watch their own city get explained badly by outsiders.
Open State exists to close that gap from both directions at once: to give arrivals a trustworthy starting point, and to give the people already here the platform to be the ones explaining it.
